My Favorite Record

06Apr09

Had dinner with Adam on Saturday night…as we were walking home we have this conversation:

Adam: Is there ever an album that when you first listen to it you don’t like it that much, but after a few listens you really like it?

Me: Yes, Jack Johnson’s On and On was like that for me … at first, I thought his first album was better, but now it’s my favorite.

Adam: Yeah, I try to keep an open mind … when I first listen to something, I always remember it could end up being my favorite record.

Here’s where I reveal that my tastes run into the bizarre and all of the music snobs will just shake their heads. Oh well.

The first time I heard Alice Donut’s “Mule” album, I hated it. I couldn’t make any sense of it. It was only after the third listening that it became my favorite album for the next few years year.

Now that I’m not a teenager anymore and I don’t have the time/attention span to listen to an album three times before deciding if I like it I know I’m missing out on lots of great new music that may not be catchy or accessible on first listen or thirty second preview.
